The Local History of South Yarra

South Yarra is an affluent and fashionable suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The suburb is situated just 4 kilometers south-east of Melbourne's central business district and has a population of around 25,000.

Early History

The land that makes up South Yarra was originally owned by the Wurundjeri clan of the Kulin nation. The area was predominantly bushland and swampy terrain, with the Yarra River flowing through the area. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s and 1840s, and the suburb was officially named South Yarra in 1854.

Growth and Development

South Yarra's growth and development really took off in the 1880s. This was due to the establishment of the railway station, which connected the suburb to Melbourne's central business district. The railway station also made it easier for people to commute to and from South Yarra, which led to an increase in residential development.
